The Chennai Bench of the Goods and Services Tax Appellate Tribunal (GSTAT) has officially begun its operations vide Public Notice F. No. GSTAT/Chennai/Misc/01/2026 dated April 01, 2026, marking a key milestone in making the GST dispute resolution framework stronger in the State of Tamil Nadu.

The development is anticipated to improve business operations by providing taxpayers with a dedicated and efficient appellate forum.

Operational Launch of the Chennai Bench

According to the Public Notice issued dated April 1, 2026, the GSTAT Chennai Bench is now operational and ready to hear appeals and applications filed under the provisions of the Central Goods and Services Tax Act, 2017, the Integrated Goods and Services Tax Act, 2017, and the Tamil Nadu Goods and Services Tax Act, 2017.

The temporary office of the Bench has been established at 2nd Floor, Narmada Block, Customs House, 60, Rajaji Salai, Chennai – 600001.

Jurisdiction of the Chennai GSTAT Bench

The Chennai Bench shall need to practice jurisdiction over key districts in Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Cuddalore, Villupuram, Kallakurichi, Vellore, Tirupathur, Ranipet, and Tiruvannamalai, as declared by the Department of Revenue.

The clarity of jurisdiction is anticipated to ease appellate proceedings and lessen the pendency in GST-pertinent disputes.

Filing of Appeals and Procedural Framework

All appeals, applications, and pertinent proceedings within the jurisdiction should be instituted before the Chennai Bench as per the Goods and Services Tax Appellate Tribunal (Procedure) Rules, 2025, and other applicable regulatory norms.

In managing GST litigation cases, the procedural structure confirms uniformity, transparency, and efficiency.

E-Filing Advisory and Resources Availability

To furnish the facilities to stakeholders, complete resources along with the e-filing advisory, procedure rules, 2025, and Presidential Orders have been made available on the GSTAT portal under the ‘NOTICE’ section.

The movie of the decision is to promote digital filing and furnish guidance to taxpayers, professionals, and departmental authorities.
